Protect Your Five

Lead with Purpose

My updates for founders, executives, and creators who want to lead with vision, not noise

Issue #94d • September 5th, 2026

This piece expands on one of the ideas from "The Tool You're Waiting For Doesn't Exist." If you haven't read that one yet, it's worth starting there.

The skill. Use AI, and every other tool, to go deeper on what already matters, not to expand what you're willing to take on. That's the entire distinction between a tool working for you and a tool working against you.

Why it matters. More capacity gets met with more demand. Get faster, and people learn you're fast, so you get more of what made you fast in the first place. AI doesn't break that pattern, it just runs it at higher speed. A capability that quietly becomes permission to say yes to a sixth priority isn't relief. It's the same overwhelm, moving faster.

How to practice it.

  • Before adopting a new tool or capability, name exactly which of your five it improves. If you can't name one, don't adopt it yet.
  • Watch for the moment a tool starts expanding your yes list instead of deepening your existing five, that's the warning sign.
  • Ask the tool to make one real priority faster, not to make room for a new one.

What's the last tool you adopted, and honestly, did it make one of your five faster, or did it just give you room to say yes to something new?

If this landed, hit reply. I read them all.

P.S. This is part of a series on the skills that actually help with overwhelm: the Anti-Skill, Cutting It Off, and the Joy of Missing Out. This is also the exact work I do with founders in Birthing of Giants. The next cohort starts October 15, capped at 16 seats.

If you're feeling it right now, you already know exactly what I mean. Five conversations this week, five different businesses, and every one of them landed on the same word: overwhelmed. Here's what I want to say plainly: AI and productivity tools will not fix...

If you haven't read that one yet, it's worth starting there. The skill. Prioritization isn't finding a way to keep everything. It's accepting there's more worth having, worth doing, worth trying, than time allows, and deciding on purpose what you're willing to let...

If you haven't read that one yet, it's worth starting there. The skill. The word "decide" comes from the Latin for "cut off." Every real decision kills the other options, permanently, and that's exactly why it's uncomfortable, and exactly why it works. Why it...
